The Township is further out, with larger lots, homes of a more recent vintage, 50s, 60s 70s etc, and a lot more new construction. The Township also has a very large, and very attractive condominium complex - which is collectively known as Chatham Glen and has four separate communities within it. Many parts of the Boro are walk to train - the township is not, They share a school system that is very highly rated. Prices in both the township and borough are generally higher than Maplewood and S.
I grew up in Chatham Borough. The Chathams are a different world than Maplewood. Personality-wise, the borough might be a little more down-to-earth. Things may have changed since I graduated in the early 90's, but my experience of the Chathams can be summed up by a very loud and heated 'discussion' in a high school history class where the teacher was trying to make the point that we lived in a middle class community, and the majority of the students were outraged at the suggestion.

In recent years some pioneers have defied that stigma, and built large homes there, enabling their children to gain access to the Chatham schools. The dump has closed. But Township residents still aren't allowed permits to park at the train station, so anyone who wishes to commute by train would be well-advised to buy a house in Chatham Borough, or at least within walking distance of the station. Madison is also wonderful, because it's even more quaint, and offers far more in the way of restaurants, bars, shops, higher education, etc.
