Even Windows Defender is now up there with the best, well, nearly. There are freebies galore, all are competent. The downside is that most of them require you to do the Updating yourself.
Norton use to be junk 5 to 10 years ago but it has really improved considerable lately. It is still not as good Windows Defender that comes built into Windows 10, but it is a decent product with fine capabilities.

You can bring Windows Defender up to par with most AV's with the tool ConfigureDefender, though it does cause it to be more prone to false positives, and Windows Defender cant really find all kinds of malware, like it doesnt have a specialized way of detecting ransomware and fileless attacks, I consider Windows Defender an jack of all trades, master of none, balanced protection, usability and performance impact, which is why if youre a high risk user who dont know what to look out for you should use an third party AV.
